Lost
It's about time that this show had a thread of its own, because I know i'm not the only one watching it. And if you aren't watching it, you aren't a hep-cat like the rest of us. Because yes, i'm in a position to make authoritative and judgemental statements like that.
Anywho... really good episode tonight. For those that like to pay attention to subtle details, there were a few more references to Numbers (4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42.) The first was kind of cutesy, in Locke's past flashback. Where are the footballs? Regulation are on aisle 8, nerf on aisle 15. What does that tell us? Lostzilla is made out of nerf material, obviously. Who can resist a giant anonymous killer island monster when it's made out of squishy material and is fun to throw? Alright. Maybe not, but it was a subtle reminder all the same.
Next up (for those that really read too far into this show) Boone finds the map of Nigeria inside the drug smugglers plane. If you use the numbers as coordinates, they end up pointing to someplace in Nigeria. Someplace that is the cause of, and the solution to, all of life's problems. A magical town full of crazy French women that win the lottery. Anyone want to go there and confirm this? Have fun.
Last one was the obvious one - Boone attempting to send out a distress call and being told "There were no survivors of Oceanic flight 815." So if it wasn't obvious already, no one is looking for them. The question is - did they give up, or find something else that leads them to believe they had 'found' the wreckage? Also - who was Boone even talking to? If someone picked up a radio transmission from that plane, they would have picked up Rousseau's radio tower transmission. You know.. the one that's been playing for the past 16 years? (Numbers again..) Just a thought.
Plenty of thematic layering to be had as well .. the game of mousetrap in the beginning, and ultimately the trap Locke was drawn into - only by his parents in the flashback, but by the island itself. Curious how the island takes away Locke's ability to walk so Boone is the one that has to go into the plane (keeping Locke safe, or intentionally putting Boone in harm's way? Depends on how you look at it.) Another thing to consider .. the island clearly led them there .. but to what end? I don't think it actually had anything to do with Boone, so much as it did in leading them to destroy the transmitter .. or possibly to use it as a means of drawing more victims .. err .. people .. to the island. Either way, one must assume that it got what it wanted when the hatch (that, again, has the Numbers on it) lit up at the end. Enough of it has been unearthed by now to see .. that I clearly have no idea what the hell it is supposed to be. But that in itself says something, it's not a mundane object like a buried piece of plane wreckage of what have you. Personally, I think the hatch leads to the secret lair of Dr. Claw and Madd Cat. Something tells me that this isn't a likely prospect, but so long is there is hope, I will continue to cling to it.
A few more random thoughts: Boone's babysitter died by breaking her neck. Locke had a sister who broke her neck. Red herring or not? The writers have already put in some subtle, and some not so subtle, references that many - if not all - of these characters are in some way connected to one another. Case in point, Hurley's offhand remark (again, made in Numbers) made in exchange with his accountant, that is listing off all of the businesses Hurley has come to own since winning the lottery. "Dude, I own a box factory?" And where did Locke work? In a box factory. There have also been established connections between Sawyer and Jack, as well as Boone, Hurley and Sun / Jin, and Kate to Kate Beckinsale, among others.
Anyone want to even bother touching upon the symbolism and plot relevance of the statues of the Virgin Mary used by the drug smugglers...? It's fun -and- blasphemous at the same time!
Next week - Claire potential goes into labor of the sobakawa miracle baby, and Boone tries to not die. I have serious doubts that he'll be the 'main character' that will apparently be offed in season 1, because it's way, way too obvious. Anyone want to place a bet in the death pool? Heh.

Oh wow, where to begin...
Yes, you are not the only one who watches Lost, and not the only one who saw last nights episode. I missed the first few minutes of the airing (AoE II: The Conquerors distracted me), but jumped in to hear about Locke's dream and to see his flashback where he first visits his dad.
It was nice to see a little bit more about Locke, since it seems like he is the character that is most misunderstood, at least in my mind. Granted I haven't seen all of the episodes, and I missed the first episode which had flashbacks with Locke, so possibly more was understood by others who have seen that episode.
The numbers still kind of creep me out, mainly just because of everybody that has died/been injured as a result of Hurley winning the lottery by using those numbers (the window-washer comes to mind). It obviously is going to be a recurring theme, at least for this season, and definitely has something to do with the concrete structure which Locke and Boone found that had the numbers on them and lite up at the end of last nights episode. I still have no idea as to what that structure is though, but that suspense only helps to make me want to see what the episode where they disclose that fact/open it up.
And the Virgin Mary? My understanding is that drug smugglers like to use seemingly innocent objects such as that and stash their cargo into them, so that they pass through most customs official without warrenting a second glance. Could there be symbolism also contained within them? Most likely, but I wouldn't be able to even make an educated guess as to what that would be.
Next episode will show us the cycle of life and death with the possible birth of Claire's baby and the possible death of Boone. Wouldn't be the first time that Claire has thought she was going to give birth, and I agree with Inde that they probably won't kill off Boone, since I would guess that they would leave that until the last or second to last episode to bust that one out. But most likely I'm wrong. Only way to find out is to keep on watching...
P.S. If anybody hears any announcements concerning the release of the episodes of Lost on DVD, you'll have to let me know. Most likely it won't happen for a while, since the season isn't even over yet, but I want to see some of the episodes I've missed, and it'll take me too long to download them individually.

Bwah. THX must not have seen this topic yet. I really figured more people would be watching. For shame!
As for it showing up on DVD.. actually, I don't think it will take very long. If it's any indication as being another JJ show, there was a very quick turnaround time from when Alias season 3 ended, and when it was available on DVD. Either way, when it comes out, i'll be picking it up. It'll be worth it to have to sit through all the "Kate stares off pensively into the distance" scenes for the chance to go back and look for minute details that I might have missed then, for not knowing what I know now.
Anywho, my take on the drug smuggling / Virgin Mary thing .. is that it's a recurring theme with the show, that quite a few characters have 'father' issues. One could choose to interpret that as being a metaphor for the 'heavenly father' .. and indeed, it would certainly seem that these people have been forsaken. So what you're left with, with the symbology of the statues .. is false and tainted promises.
If true, they would certainly lend themselves to one of the more popular theories, that everyone already died in the crash, and they're in limbo. (As redemption is also a recurring theme.) If that's true, it would make the show .. at least thematically .. somewhat similar to Haibane Renmei, which was an awesome, awesome series that .. maybe 3 people on this board will have heard of, heh.

No, it's not a reality show, but is kind of based on the same principles. There is a lot of backstabing etc, like in Survivor, but it is fiction. A very good show though, I really like the flashbacks where it gives an explination for their actions, rather than like on reality TV's usual explanation that the other berson is simply a bi*** or bast***. Mind you look, at where I spend most of my free time. I spend enough of my own life in reality.

I would be absolutely thrilled if you were right, and I'd agree that the highly popular new shows have had a tendency to crank out their Season DVD's. Hurrah for capitalism!!

Agreed; most likely, I'll be one of the first few people who are grabbing it off the shelf. I hate not knowing what happened in those episodes I've missed, especially if the current episode is discussing something from a character who I've seen no flashbacks on.

I guess I just don't hear enough talk about the show at my school; seems most people like watching MTV and home makeover shows rather than watching some decent quality programming which doesn't involve rap music and bling-bling (unless it's in the flashbacks).

I've never really had an opportunity to watch much random television, so I can't say that I've ever come across that before, either on TV or over the Internet. Sounds like an anime; what's the basis behind the show, and would there be any samples of the series I could take a look at to see if I'm interested?

I started watching this show from the very beginning, in fact it's the only show that everyone in my family watches (it's the only show my son watches at all). We haven't missed a single episode (Tivo) and I'll let you in on a secret, we have no better idea what's going on then you do!
The show is amazing; it just goes to show that TV doesn't have to be a "wasteland". The writing is awesome; the writers have the best imaginations I've seen.
I believe that these characters are all dead and in limbo, that's the only way I can explain Jack's father's body being missing and his seeing him walking around and the fact that Locke (we still have yet to see how he ended up in a wheel chair) who was a paraplegic can now walk
I thought the statues of the Virgin signified the fact that Locke's mother told him he was an immaculate conception when they first met?
By the way, did everyone catch the shot of Hurley on the Korean TV screen during the last Sun / Jin flashback?
I plan on buying the Season 1 DVD when it comes out, I want to check out the stuff I didn't know to look for too (this last flashback I learned Locke had only been in a wheelchair 4 years, I missed it in the 1st flashback).
Per the Netflix website the DVD of season one will be released Sept. 6th.

Well.. they actually went ahead and killed Boone, and Claire had a normal baby. Who knew?
This show has gotten into an unfortunate tendency of ending each episode on a cliffhanger that is never really followed up on, or given a knee-jerk work around... so to see them actually start sticking to the hard calls, it only makes things even better. And, judging from the previews, things are just going to continue to get more interesting.
I think.. if I were watching this show on DVD, I wouldn't mind the constant cliffhangers, so long as the suspense and build up is met with an equal payoff .. but when you have to wait a week, or more, to sometimes get nothing.. it's a little hard. The wait for Season 2 is going to be brutal, heh.

Tonight was the only night that I cursed our satellite dish; just as the show was beginning, a rainstorm hit, and we weren't able to see the first 10 minutes or so. I had to switch it back to just a normal "Air" setting to pick up ABC.
Definitely wasn't expecting the ending where Jack decides to hunt down Locke, since I thought he had figured from what Boone said before he died that he had fallen in the airplane and was hurt that way, but that Locke was just afraid of the consequences, or something along those lines. I didn't expect there to be anything wrong with the baby, but I also didn't really expect Boone to die at that point. But the show is further in the season than I had originally thought, so I guess it would work as a "towards end of season" thing.
When's the next new episode will be? I'm hoping next week, but I won't hold my breath.

Yeah Manderlock, it's way too far in the season now to be able to just jump in and start watching the show and have any idea what's going on. It's always a nice way to pass the time though, so I would still recommend watching it if you have some free time on Wednesday nights from 7 until 8 CST.

If you like a good mystery/thriller/drama, then you will like Lost.
The only other show I can relate it to at the moment is the new Battle Star Galactica or even Babylon 5. Each episode stands by itself but leads into the next episode revealing a little more but adding more questions and mystery.
Last nights episode was kinda Meh!...but I think it is due to the fact that this may be the calm before the storm...next week looks like it could be a real plot developer/twister.
